In France and Japan, medical aromatherapy is an established field, employing techniques that address such serious conditions as diabetes and seizure disorders. In the United States, it is used as supportive care in an effort to improve quality of life and reduce stress and anxiety among cancer patients.
“Many essential oils are natural analgesics—substances that provide relief from pain by acting on the peripheral and ventral nervous systems. For instance, wintergreen essential oil contains between 85 and 99 percent methyl salicylate, which is the same active ingredient contained in aspirin. Before synthetic pain relievers were introduced in the 1920s, wintergreen and birch were considered to be the best remedies for pain; in fact, Native Americans used both plants before written records were ever kept.”
Essential oils are naturally occurring aromatic compounds found in the seeds, stems, bark, roots, flowers and other parts of plants. They can be used for a wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications.
One of the quickest ways to shift a mind state, or mood, is via our sense of smell. Following the inhalation of an essential oil aroma, the scent is processed in the brain’s olfactory system. This system is responsible for our sense of smell. The olfactory system is connected to the limbic system, the part of the brain where our memories and emotions are stored. Specific aromas elicit specific emotions or feelings. (Gingerbread in the oven=cozy, warm, nurtured)
The idea behind using aromatherapy to promote healthy emotional states is that we can select certain essential oils to elicit desired feelings and emotions, especially when we are looking to promote relaxation or reduce our stress response. For example, before I teach a yoga class a few deep breaths of Frankincense rubbed into my palms promotes feelings of being grounded, stabile and clear. I do this tiny ritual before every class I teach or Reiki session I offer.
Each essential oil has a unique chemical profile which gives the oil certain properties and benefits. My greatest responsibility as an essential oil educator is to help my clients select and use safely the oils that may best support not only their emotional needs but their overall health and wellness goals.
As a Wellness Advocate for dōTERRA, I enjoy working with clients who are interested in adding more natural solutions to their health, homes and families. Once I understand a client’s health and wellness goals, we design a customized plan to slowly incorporate essential oils into their daily wellness habits. To date, I have found that diffusing is a popular entry point for those looking to incorporate essential oils in their daily routines. Clients enjoy discovering which oils appeal to their sense of smell and then learning how each oils can affect positive change on their mood, emotions and environment.
I have found doTERRA to be committed in their intention to enhancing the lives not only of their growers and suppliers using a strategy called “Co-Impact Sourcing” but also their commitment to their Healing Hands Foundation. To date, almost 6 million dollars has been donated to humanitarian projects funded by the Healing Hands Foundation. For me, one in particular, Operation Underground Railroad (OUR), motivates me to continue to grow this business while directly supporting humanitarian efforts as significant as this one (link below).
OUR Rescue exists to rescue children from sex trafficking by utilizing some of the world’s experts in extraction operations and anti-child trafficking efforts. OUR Rescue’s Jump Team, consisting of former CIA, Navy SEALs, and Special Ops operatives, lead coordinated identification and extraction efforts to rescue children being trafficked for sex.
It is clear to me that, although large in size, as a company, doTERRA is dedicated to growing the best in order to help the most. It feels good to be a part of an organization looking to share the benefits of essential oils in a responsible and professional way that respects both modern medicine and the more holistic modalities that support it.
It is my personal hunch that within the next few years we may begin to see more holistic style clinics incorporating essential oils as a part of their wellness treatments and recommendations. These holistic clinics will have traditional doctors fusing modern medicine with chiropractors, acupuncturists, massage therapists and other professionals in the healing arts under one roof and working together in support of their patients’ overall health and wellness.
